# How policies work

> Gorelo policies distribute checks, plugins, and scripts to assets using tag-based targeting, so you can apply ScreenConnect or other tools at scale.

Policies are hierarchical configuration containers that you set up to manage assets based on tags. A policy does the following:

* Define a set of tags and associated components.
* Automatically apply checks, plugins and scripts to all matching assets during distribution.

Policies are applied hierarchically from top to bottom. Different policies might contain the same elements targeting the same asset:

* Check
* Plugin
* Script

To avoid conflicts, the highest matching policy in the hierarchy takes priority and overrides the policies below for that specific conflicting element. For example, a client-specific Windows Patch Management policy overrides the base policy.

List, create and edit all policies from the **Policies** option in the lateral bar menu.
